YOUR GOALS. YOUR PLAN.
Start with a conversation.
Listen
The appearance you want and what matters to you.
Design
An individual plan for your hairline or facial hair.
Plan your care
Review treatment, recovery, and payment before surgery.
START WITH YOUR GOALS
A hairline that reflects your goals.
AM&A offers three approaches to gender-affirming hair transplantation. Your preferred appearance guides the design; there is no single hairline or facial hair pattern you need to choose.
Hairline feminization
Discuss a softer hairline, temple restoration, or additional coverage. Shape and placement depend on your preferences, existing hair, and donor supply.
Hairline masculinization
Explore hairline definition and restoration of thinning areas as part of an individualized plan that considers future hair loss.
Facial hair transplantation
Discuss beard, mustache, or sideburn restoration, including desired density, hair direction, donor hair characteristics, and ongoing grooming.
An examination is needed to assess donor supply, scalp or skin health, medical history, and realistic coverage. Surgery is not appropriate for everyone.
UNDERSTAND THE PROCEDURE
What is FUE hair transplantation?
Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a surgical technique that removes individual follicular units from a donor area and transplants them into areas of hair loss. It avoids removing a strip of scalp, but it can still leave small scars.
01 / EXTRACT
Select donor grafts
Individual follicular units are collected from the planned donor area.
02 / PREPARE
Prepare for placement
The grafts and recipient area are prepared according to your restoration plan.
03 / PLACE
Build the planned coverage
Grafts are placed with attention to hair direction, distribution, and the agreed hairline.

YOUR CARE AT AM&A
Respectful care. Individual planning.
Meet with Dr. Robert Milanes to review your goals, health history, medicines, donor hair, and proposed treatment. Tell us the name and pronouns you use and how you prefer our team to contact you.
If you use hormone therapy or are planning other procedures, discuss timing and coordination with your treating clinicians. Do not change prescribed medicines without their guidance. Transplantation does not stop future loss in existing hair.
Meet your physician ↗INSURANCE & SELF-PAY
Understand coverage before scheduling.
Gender-affirming hair transplantation may be considered for coverage under some plans when medical-necessity and benefit requirements are met. Coverage, network participation, referrals, and prior authorization must be verified for your specific plan, clinician, procedure, and treatment location.
Contact our team to discuss insurance benefits, referral requirements, and any prior authorization needed for your care. Coverage depends on your individual plan and is not guaranteed. If your procedure is not covered, we can discuss an itemized self-pay estimate before you decide.

Healing takes weeks.
Hair growth takes months.
Know what to expect at each stage, with a care plan from your surgical team.
DAYS 1–3
Rest & protect
Protect the treated area and follow your team’s positioning and care instructions. Avoid rubbing or scratching the grafts.
DAYS 4–14
Careful daily care
Follow your staged washing plan. Avoid picking at scabs, strenuous exercise, and heavy lifting until cleared by your team.
EARLY MONTHS
A period of change
Transplanted hairs can shed before new growth appears. Early thinning does not show the final outcome.
MONTHS 6–12
Watch growth develop
Results often become visible around 6–9 months; some patients need 12 months. Growth, density, and timing vary.
Your recovery is personal.
This is a general guide. Scalp and facial hair procedures may need different aftercare. Follow your team’s instructions for washing, shaving, work, and exercise.
Contact your surgical team if you are concerned about healing. Your consultation will cover risks including bleeding, infection, scarring, altered sensation, and an unsatisfactory cosmetic result.
Growth timing: American Academy of Dermatology. Individual results vary.
BEFORE YOU BOOK
Questions about gender-affirming hair care
Is a consultation a commitment to surgery?
No. A consultation helps you understand available options, limitations, alternatives, recovery, and costs. You can decide whether and when to move forward.
Is FUE painless or scar-free?
No surgical procedure can promise either. Local anesthesia helps with comfort during treatment. Soreness and small scars can occur; we’ll review comfort measures and risks with you.
Will I need a referral or supporting documentation?
Requirements vary by plan and proposed procedure. A review may request a referral, clinical evaluation, medical-necessity documentation, photographs with consent, or other supporting records. Ask our office for a secure method to provide records; approval is not guaranteed.
Can my care team or health plan contact AM&A?
Yes. Referring clinicians, care managers, and network reviewers can call (949) 658-2727 to discuss the services offered and request the appropriate administrative contact. Network credentialing and patient-specific treatment authorization are separate reviews.
